Foreword: Why this Book may Be for You
It has been said that preaching has become one of the lost arts. If the pulpits of our modern day are to attract and transform the vast multitudes who are yet without Christ; it must rekindle the flames of dynamic preaching and teaching of the Gospel. Dr. Leonard Lovett reaches out with his soul; and lays hands on the pulse beat of the Body of Christ. Upon checking her vital signs and responses; she has been diagnosed with a serious problem. She has been placed in the balances and found wanting. Too often our sacred institutions of higher learning have place emphasis on the “sons of the Ministry;” rather than focus on the “fathers of the faith” who have served as “guardians and trustees of Divine Truth!”Preaching has been relegated to an oratorical exercise which appeals to the social norms of acceptance, and mind-sets of a people in search of themselves, rather than in pursuit of the Holy. Great themes, sensational titles, and catch-all phrases that tickle the “itching ear,” have permeated the atmosphere of Christendom. All they have done is satisfy those who want to be politically and culturally correct in the eyes of man. But, the result has become detrimental to the health and spiritual well-being of the Body of Christ. We need an application of the remedy given by God centuries ago: “Preach the Word!”
Those who dare stand as representatives of the Kingdom of God must embrace the type of preaching that will eradicate the spiritual graffiti that has marred the hallowed halls where men and women of conviction and purpose have faithfully labored. The enemies of the Cross have written the Church off, and have placed signs of protest in every field of endeavor they could find. “Ichabod” seems to be the candidate of choice! Dr. Lovett shares a word with us, and we are re-assured that the glory of God has not departed from us!The dialectical method of preaching appeals to the understanding, a clear conscience, and hungry hearts! It reaches us where we are, and if appropriated this approach can be rewarding and can be the vehicle to bring about renewal, restoration, and revival. To be effective, we must appeal to the imago Dei [image of God] in humankind. It is out of our finitude, our own crucibles of experience; that we address our hearers; for we have removed the shoes from our feet, recognizing that we who preach the Gospel stand on Holy Ground! It is from the vantage point of this high ground that we appeal to the soul of man with the noblest of truths, the most profound arguments, and the greatest opportunity to preach a healing and delivering Christ to a sin-sick world.
This kind of preaching stops by the roadside, and attends to the wounded and disenfranchised, while the spiritual elitists pass by on the other side. They carry on their duties in the temple, and perform all the sacraments; but the essence of their message is left wounded and hi-jacked in the ditch on the side of the road! Dialectical preaching lifts humankind up, and ministers to one’s wounds. We will either have a mass funeral, or a mass revival. “For we have this Ministry in earthen vessels!” We are not our own, for we have been bought with a great price. Our anointing comes from God. Our appointment is by divine assignment. Our message and our mission is affirmed and validated by the Holy Spirit. We live in an age where everything is produced with amazing alacrity. We settle for “nuked food,” because it creates more time for us to take care of the things that we deem to be important.
_____________________________________________________________________
We have produced a generation that is suffering from an “acute obesity.” They have been given “fast food” for so long that when they come to God’s House for worship, they simply want a snack-pack so they move on to the next item on their agenda. They are stuffed with “junk food!” They have a sense of being full; only to find out they are really running on empty. They are over-fed and extremely undernourished; suffering from spiritual nutrition.
______________________________________________________________________________Dialectical Preaching allows us to sit down, and eat a well-balanced meal. Thank you, Dr. Lovett, for I will take the “Crock-Pot” over the microwave anytime. After preaching and teaching the Word of God for a lifetime, Dr. Lovett has demonstrated the capacity to endure betrayal and “wounds in the house of friends” and continues to inspire us. As a servant of God, I too must drink when I am thirsty and eat when I am hungry. In this book we have found a fountain. I don’t want to be a castaway. The times in which we live are too critical to be “shadow-boxing.”
A myriad of volumes have been written on preaching. They cover book shelves and fill personal libraries and bookstores all over the world. It’s evident that this literary masterpiece has been birthed from the womb of the life experiences of the author in his quest for “preaching excellence!” It challenges us to rethink our calling and position in the Body of Christ. The man’s message, method, and mission breathes a dynamic of divine purpose, and signals to us “an addiction to the righteousness of God.”Thank you for the morsels that you have placed on the table for us to fully partake of in these perilous times. Thank you for opening the very curtains of your soul-ness; and sharing with us some of the landscapes that have marked your profound and faithful ministry to the Word. I am challenged to go back to my study, take a deep breath, and express gratitude to “God, our Maker, Who giveth songs in the night!” It is time to look again at the “crock-pot” methodology of Dialectical Preaching. Let’s stand on the shoulders of Dr. Lovett; and , after eavesdropping on the conversation of that powerful voice of the halcyon past of Dr. Proctor; we can say to today’s generation, “Is it soup yet? Yes, it is! The table is spread and the feast of the Lord is going on!”
When my life comes to its initial close; and my steps which have been ordered by the Lord have ceased to make “chronological imprints” in the sands of time as we know it; and my biological time clock has flat-lined; in that moment I will stake my claim, and cash in on His promises Dialectic Preaching brings us back to the “crock-pot!” We can’t survive life’s misfortunes, storms, tragedies, and trials on “nuked foods.” They only serve as snacks along the way. We are not running wind sprints, but we are in a marathon. We need some “on-the-way-home cooking” to sustain us!”
Because of Calvary May God bless you!

Dear Pastor:
It took nearly two decades to unlock the key to healthy church development. This Spring Close Your Back Door as you Widen the Front Door of Your Church…[two books in one] which has been out of print for seven years, was completely revised. ¦ Answers why its way past time to free the sisters in ministry
¦ Reveals how to liberate and reclaim your city
¦ Approach to grasping conceptually Faith-based Initiatives
¦ Illustrates how to inventory and evaluate the five key most areas of ministry in your church
¦ How to find over 1,000 converts in three years using the 1-2-1 soul winning method
For 2010 and beyond Close Your Back Door is a must read. Dr. Lovett has carefully written the ground breaking work that represents a watershed that will alter the discourse from church growth emphasis to church development. As Lovett focuses on the health of the church he admonishes leaders to become intentional in developing Kingdom people rather than church people…the key to building a vibrant healthy twenty-first century church. Evangelism is viewed as a process and not an event.Armed with a perspective of the kingdom and utilizing the metaphor of a “door” Lovett relies heavily upon his pastoral experience in Philadelphia, Atlanta and Los Angeles. Lovett issues a “no nonsense” challenge and clarion call to church leaders to change their paradigms and live on the creative edge of where the Holy Spirit is leading the church. This renaissance pastor, theologian-ethicist, ecumenicist simply presents practical ways to broaden and expand your ministry by “closing your backdoor” as you simultaneously “widen the Front Door” of your church. This is vintage Lovett at his best.
Grace be with you,

Kingdom Beyond Color is a passionate no non-sense, tell it like it is response to racism from the perspective of faith. The Faith Community is indicted for its silence and simultaneously held high for its promise in leading the way toward the resolution of racism through word and deed. Lovett confronts friend and foe with equal passion as he places the onus of responsibility for social change on every member of the Faith Community. The Faith Community is challenged and strongly admonished to lead the way by example through radical repentance. It is virtually impossible to receive the fullness of the Kingdom of God and remain racist. It is a collective call to all to participate in the social redemption of the global village from the ravages of the demons of racism, who now have a new address and zip code.
